ISBN

The ISBN numbers are the multiple anchors that hold us fast to the distribution networks of the continents . . .

The term ISBN number (of course!) features a disused word, the word 'number' doubling the N of the abbreviation. There may be a name for that phenomenon.

To think that ISBNs were only devised in 1967, meaning they are about the same age as myself. We were both born at the same time and we would both come of age in the time of data.

Books were shipped from Edinburgh across the world, and for centuries, with ne'ery an ISBN number.

Until 1967 and we came along.

I'd have to imagine, you'd be sair pushed to have a computer track down a book if that book these days if that book didn't have an ISBN number. I can't decide if that makes publishing easier or harder.

ISBNs also help us in questions of authenticity, and certainly they allow all publications to be placed in national collections.

But what if national collections are meaningless?

I have a small collection of books without ISBNs. One of my favourite of them is by Aaron Tingz.

The pricing structure of ISBNs; it is not at all cost effective to buy just the one.

This leads to the naive and novice practise of  'ISBN lending'.

I recently bought a further one hundred ISBNs.

It will be an experience, it is certainly a challenge, a satisfaction, it will be an ADVENTURE trying to assign one of them to John Rodker.

Yes that's John Rodker LOL.

I will enjoy assigning every one, I imagine I will, I am sure I will.

Thank you for your application for an ISBNs.
