ISBN

. . . the ISBN numbers, the multiple anchors that hold us fast to the distribution networks of the continents . . .

The term ISBN number of course features a disused word, the word 'number' doubling the N of the abbreviation. There may be a name for that phenomenon.

To think that ISBNs were only devised in 1967, meaning they are about the same age as myself. We were both born at the same time and we would both come of age in the time of data.

Books were shipped from Edinburgh across the world, and for centuries, with ne'ery an ISBN number.

Until 1967 and we came along.

I'd have to imagine, you'd be sair pushed to have a computer track down a book if that book didn't have a number. I can't decide if that makes publishing easier or harder.

Maybe if I printed 500 copies of Lesley Storm's IT'S ABOUT TIME and had them delivered to my office, I could thereafter sell them to suppliers? Without ISBNs?

Not a hope.

ISBNs also help us in questions of authenticity, and certainly they allow all publications to be placed in national collections.

But what if national collections are meaningless?

I have a small collection of books without ISBNs. One of my favourite of them is by Aaron Tingz.

The pricing structure of ISBNs; you cannot buy one.

This leads to the naive and novice practise of  'ISBN lending'.

I hope dear diary, to confess in full to the various near misses and minor abuses I have myself committed here.

You can in fact of course buy just the one ISBN. But single ISBNs have usually been priced over the years, not that short of the price of ten. Something like £89 for one, £109 for ten the first time I bought some.

Then there is the purchase of ISBNs by the hundred; which I had to make because I know of at least a dozen assigned books I intend to publish.

If you need more than 2,000 ISBNs in one single purchase, according to Nielsen Book Services, you are advised to contact them directly.

I recently bought a further one hundred ISBNs. It will be an experience, it is certainly a challenge, a satisfaction, it will be an ADVENTURE trying to assign one of them to John Rodker.

Yes that's John Rodker LOL.

I will enjoy assigning every one, I imagine I will, I am sure I will.

Thank you for your application for an ISBNs.
